I thought I had survived my tumultuous teenage years when I graduated from high school, received a scholarship to college, and moved across the country to begin a fresh, new chapter. However, less than six weeks into my first semester, and home for a family visit and a doctor’s appointment to complete my immunizations for school, my life turned upside down.
Not every adult adoptee feels the same about their adoption, but as an adoptive mother and adoption professional, I love to hear personal accounts of adoption, from every perspective in the adoption triad (birth parents, adoptive parents and adoptee). These stories help adoptive parents to raise their children to feel as comfortable and secure as possible in their personal adoption story. Many people consider adopting but become too discouraged by the complexity of the adoption process to proceed past an initial thought. It's true that adoption is a complex process that includes preparation, education, the legal process, finances, not to mention the emotions involved! No two adoptions are the same, and each state's laws are a little different, but each follow the same general steps:
Although there is no tangible gift that can thank a woman enough for bearing a child that she will entrust completely to another, it is understandable that adoptive parents may want to pass forward a token of appreciation and acknowledgment to their child’s birth mother and, in some circumstances, birth father.
If you have adopted a child or are considering it, you may already know about the Adoption Tax Credit. The credit, which has been part of federal tax law since 1997, allows adoptive families to defray some of the costs incurred when they grow their families through adoption. It has helped bring together hundreds of thousands of families, many of whom would not have been able to grow their families through adoption without it.
My own adoption story is relatively short as far as time… we took home our daughter within six months of being certified to adopt… but it was not without its fair share of drama. Fortunately, it ends with the most perfect child becoming a permanent part of our family.
Just last week, I had five different encounters where perfect strangers asked me about my daughter’s “real parents,” each not meaning to be hurtful, just inquisitive. Luckily, my child isn’t yet old enough to understand or be hurt by those particular words, but I know that day will come.
