Naming your child is a big deal, many people have family names or favorite names they have picked out for their child for years before their child arrives. But in an adoption scenario, there are a lot of things to consider when naming or “re-naming” a child at the finalization of an adoption. So, today is my (gulp) 43rd birthday. I used to be one of those people who LOVED my birthday, and was so excited to celebrate it, preferably for a whole week. Now that I’m in my 40s, I feel a little less like that (I’d really rather like to stop aging altogether), but it has also been adoption that has changed my perspective on birthdays as well. My mom typically texts me or calls me the morning of my birthday, celebrating a special and momentous day for her as well. But the same can’t be said for a birth mother who placed her child with another. My daughter Cora’s birthday is only a week after mine, and now I feel a pang of sadness on Cora’s birthday each year. National Adoption Awareness Month

November is National Awareness Month. During the month of November we celebrate and raise awareness of adoption. While every type of adoption is celebrated, the particular focus this month is to raise awareness about the urgent need for adoptive families for children and youth in foster care. During the month of November, people across the nation raise awareness of adoption and hope that awareness of adoption encourages others to open their homes to children waiting for a forever home. Also, this month includes National Adoption Day, which is usually observed in courthouses nationwide, where thousands of adoptions are finalized on National Adoption Day,. COVID has put a damper on some state’s celebrations, but we are hopeful that there will still be energy around this important cause. This year, Purl will be highlighting some of our favorite resources for both prospective adoptive families and families that are already formed through adoption. We hope you’ll enjoy what we share!

The Adoption Profile – Do we really need professional photos?

Popping on here quickly to address a question I get asked a lot, do we really need professional photos in order to have a good adoption profile?! The answer is no, you don’t need professional photos taken specifically for your adoption profile, but you do need high quality photos. Those don’t have to come through professional photos, but generally professional photos will ensure high quality photos to use in a profile. At a minimum, you’re going to need photos taken with a good digital camera, or at least a relatively new phone, to take photos of 2 MB or higher. Click here to learn more!

Just a quick note to remind even those well-intentioned people who ask questions or make comments about adoption to adoptive parents. This is a blog post I can relate to identifying 10 Things NOT to say to an adoptive parent, as I believe I’ve been asked/told all of these 10 things she points out at one point or another after adopting our daughter Cora. I have shared insight about positive adoption language, myths and misnomers and similar topics before, but hopefully this is a good reminder. Surprisingly enough, I have actually gotten these questions by perfect strangers more than even close friends or family. So here’s a quick list of what NOT to say…

The Continuing Impact of COVID-19 on Domestic Adoption

This is an update on the continued impact of COVID-19 on domestic adoptions. Many of you may have read my post in March on the impact of COVID-19, but I wanted to update that, particularly as we enter a new wave of cases in some states. What has been most interesting for us at Purl though, has been the significant increase in the numbers of potential prospective adoptive parents contacting us, which seems to have resulted in part due to families being home, potentially with more time to start the adoption process. That, coupled with these factors below, are making for an interesting domestic adoption environment for prospective adoptive families (a few positives, but overall generally negative). Everyone Isn’t Meant to Adopt…

I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately and I felt I just needed to be blunt. I often get calls from families that are hoping to adopt due to infertility or other obstacles creating their family naturally, but without a lot of understanding and knowledge about adoption, and the impact of it on all members of the adoption triad. So because of this, I just want to tell you that ADOPTION IS NOT FOR EVERYONE! Make sure you do your homework before you begin, and definitely before you bring your child home. It is okay if you research adoption and decide it isn’t for you. In my opinion, there isn’t enough education and preparation that happens in the typical home study process, and you need to do the work as prospective adoptive parents to make sure this is the route you want to take to grow your family.
